Immune system challenges are one of the possible causes attributed to CFS or ME. The immune system is our body’s defense against diseases. It is designed to detect and destroy harmful substances like bacteria and viruses.

In some people with CFS, their immune system appears to be slightly impaired. The reason for this is not understood completely but, it is thought that in these cases, something might have triggered the immune system to start functioning less efficiently than usual. This can be a viral or bacterial infection, which the body has difficulty fighting off.

This sustained stress on the immune system causes inflammation and other issues that, over time, drain the body’s resources leading to a feeling of being persistently fatigued. However, more research is needed to fully understand this connection.
